The Indian Diaspora is the third largest in the world and compose of nearly 25 million people living in almost every corner of the globe. Artists from this diaspora bring with them an unique perspective to the art world and I believe have a very important role to play in helping non-Indians understand India and Indians and at the same time bring their Indian sensibilities, narratives and contexts to their otherwise western perspectives.

Over the last few years I have been very actively seeking artists who bring a new context to their works because of who they are and where they come from. Artists I have started collecting include Bari Kumar, Chitra Ganesh, Swati Khuara, Praneet Soi and a few others.

INDIAN ART AND ICONOLOGY by Dr. Asok K BhattacharyaThis publication contains fifteen essays on ancient and medieval Indian art, arranged in two sections in view of their distinct approaches to the subject. Essays of the first section deal with the formal aspects, relying chiefly on stylistic developments ensued in various phases of history from such factors as foreign contact, religious enthusiasm and social upheaval.

Asma Menon, one of India's finest woman artists, uses paint to compose poetry. Her new collection reflects a her view of nature, people, animals in a mythological setting.

Artist Revati Sharma Singh, will be showing her artwork titled 'Between the Lines’ as a first solo exhibition in Worli, Mumbai at Gallery Art & Soul. Revati addresses the complexities of inhabiting a world where ‘lines’ characterize trends of upheaval and unison. It is through this body of works that she portrays human essence and evolution in a thought-provoking and awe-inspiring manner. Having been featured in several international exhibitions, Revati is the first Indian female artist to have had a solo exhibition at the Kings Road Gallery in London. Her paintings have been featured in group shows, both in India and abroad, and have made way into several prestigious collections

As the blog understandingpaintings said, there are no rules to appreciating abstracts. You only need to keep an open mind and let it wander while watching an abstract. Your mind will decipher the meaning. It need not be what the artist intended, but it serves the purpose if the painting is able to move you in some way.
