What is more important? Peace and co-existence or Creativity and freedom of expression?

I wish artists react to this discussion frankly. Most of the questions related to religion /violence / terrorism and politics will be answered through a vigorous discussion related to Art.Finding a final answers to social problems is extremely difficult but at least we shall have a clue of direction that we must take.

That depends on how ART is described. Personally, I think, you can never be completely free, you have certain constraints
that you have to work under, always.
Trouble arises when clash arises and you need to decide what you are going to back up.Nothing is unrelated and without Peace and co-existence,art is meaningless
There is a strange paradox here, I feel.
The lack of peace and co-existence - familial, personal, national or global - obviously can curb freedom of expression but not creativity. Historically, some of the finest art was created in troubled times and by troubled lives...
So they are all mutually co-related but not necessarily inter-dependent!
You are comming to the main question slowly. Let us look for finest art at finest time of Human lives. We do not need Finest art of all times if it comes through pain, suffering and exploitation. Finest Art is never more important than peaceful times for whole mankind.
but sir, is not the art created in times of pain and suffering usually a cry for peace and truth and beauty? Is not the value of that art in it that it fulfills the many possible roles that it can play - as a replication of beauty, as a peaceful protest, as activism, as sensitization, as a mirror of the times, as a symbol of hope, truth and beauty.....etc.
creating art at the cost of pain and suffering -no!
creating art in times of pain and suffering-yes!

"as a symbol of hope, truth and beauty.....etc." The concept Sathym Shivam Sundaram and the lotus as a motif of something pure and beautiful emerging from muddied waters.

Very nicely said!
what use is it to compare the two as if they were in contradiction...unless of course creativity or freedom of expression
are leading to war or violence ... that hardly ever happens and it is naive to think that it is artists not states that cause wars...
but if you insist on one making this choice, then i vote for peace and co existence ... my freedom of expression is not worth
other peoples lives !
Nothing is contradiction in this universe. All are compatible, even the biggest contrasts.Only when conflict arises, one has to choose ONE over another.Like you, i would prefer the same.
i personally feel all four are important aspects, the idea of peace and coexistence can be preached only thru freedom of expression in innumerable ways

Dear Ajith sir, PEACE & COEXISTENCE OR CREATIVITY OR FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION - They are interdependent. They are two sides of one coin. Creativity- freedom of expression & peace - coexistence together is a whole truth. How can there be a creativity when someones freedom of expression is snatched? And how can there be a peace & coexistence when freedom of expression is hijacked? Peace & coexistence is possible only when others freedom of expression is respected. You can take away someones freedom of expression - it,s a act of enslavement & then you can roar your orders of peace & coexistence. There also will be a peace & coexistence, but it,ll be out of fear. And history is a witness to such acts of horror of dictatorship has no happy ending. Forced Peace & coexistence will be out of fear & it will give birth to violence, it,ll give birth to WARS. So we have to respect others freedom of expression & the rest will fall in line.....
Social surrounding had always effected - any kind of creativity - natural or art....artificial!!?? but creativity and freedom of expression is always important to me in person - and I strongly believe that it's very very important for every living being on any planet! -Daljit Gill
There was this 'joke' going around a long time ago it said 'people look at Italy and Switzerland. Italy has had wars, violence, hunger, heat and poverty while Switzerland has had peace, beauty and money but all they gave the world was chocolate and cuckoo clocks, while Italy has given the world artists, architects, musicians, scientists and sports persons' This question of peace and co-existence OR freedom of expression is something like that. I feel there is some amount of crisis, a loss of peace and easy co-existence, at whatever level personal or otherwise, that more often than not gives rise to serious art. Having said that we need peace and co-existence to appreciate that art and the freedom of expression to talk about it.
So, its a circle, there is peace and co-existence where we look at, appreciate and collect art, then there freedom of expression that is born out of that peace, which invariably leads to someone somewhere getting upset, that is followed by unrest, violence and from it creativity and then back again to peace, to admire the positive that came out of the negativity.
